Summer Vacation Essentials

Summer Vacation Essentials.

Did you know that summer is the most popular time to travel?  Guessing why is rather easy; the sun is out, the temperatures are warmer, the kids are out of school and after being cooped up, everyone has gotten over the winter blues and can't wait to explore new dream destinations.

If you’ve got the travel bug and you’re ready to get out and soak up the sun in a foreign land, whether you're planning a romantic cruise around the Mediterranean or a family vacation to a beautiful beach destination with the kids in tow. We have shared our summer vacation essentials list below with everything you need to know, do and bring along for a fun and carefree travel experience this summer!

1. A High-quality Suite Case
When you’re traveling all over, you can’t settle for just any old bag to lug around. Dish out a little extra cash to pick up something sturdy, stylish, and dependable. If you plan on flying often, it’s worth your while to invest in a luggage set that stands out on the baggage claim carousel—you don’t want to wait around for an hour awkwardly grasping suitcases that aren’t yours.

2. Festive Clothing
Summer vacation is the perfect time to to get bold and colorful with your clothing choices. Break out that chili pepper t-shirt for Mexico or Guinness hat for Ireland. Think Hawaiian shirts for men and sarongs for the ladies while vacationing at any popular Hawaiian beach destinations. Don’t miss the opportunity to bust out that tie-dye t-shirt, while you soak up the sun in Jamaica.

3. Sun Hats
Ladies know better than anyone just how important it is to stay protected from the sun. Failing to do so can do permanent damage to your skin and cause wrinkles to appear faster. Sun hats are a stylish and fun way to keep your skin protected wherever you vacation.

4. Sunglasses
Your skin isn’t the only thing that needs protection from the sun while you’re on vacation— the whites of your eyes can get damaged too! Pick up a couple pairs of sunglasses before you catch that flight to Cabo. Not only are they a practical necessity, but they are wonderful fashion accessories as well. Look like the queen you are with a sun hat, two-piece bikini, and oversized sunglasses while you sip on summer cocktails poolside.

5. Swimwear
Don’t make the mistake of leaving your board shorts or bathing suit at home. Even if you’re backpacking through Europe, you never know if one of the hotels you’re staying at has a Jacuzzi or if your host family will take you to the beach. Swimwear isn’t going to take up much space in your bag and it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

6. Sunscreen & Sun Protection
UV damage to your skin is no joke; don’t brush off the importance of sunscreen and sun protection regardless of your destination. It doesn’t matter if London’s weather is calling for overcast and cloudy skies, you can still get sunburn.

Remember, the higher the SPF, the fewer times you will have to reapply. Consider picking up two separate kinds of sunscreen, one for your face and one for your body (regular body sunscreen can clog the pores on your face). Water-proof sunscreen is always a plus if you plan on doing any physical activities outdoors or jumping in the water.

7. Medicine
The last situation you want to find yourself in is struggling to ask for Pepto-Bismol in because you cannot speak the language of the country you're in. Pack a small bag of basic medicines like Advil and Tums whenever you travel and always get the necessary vaccines before traveling.

8. Travel Wallet or Pouch
Whenever vacationing domestically or abroad, it’s never a bad idea to use a travel wallet. If you down to many pints with the lads in Ireland, you’ll be glad you made it back to the hotel with your passport, travel pass, and cash.

Travel wallets are especially helpful for backpackers who are often the target of petty theft and robbery in foreign countries. Be sure to pick up the kind that can easily be hidden under your clothing.

9. Travel Guide
If you want to make the most of your vacation destination, pick up a travel guide at your local bookstore before you fly. You might be surprised to find out just how valuable some of the information provided really is. Plan on doing a tour of the Roman Coliseum? A travel book will likely have historic details that could make the experience all the more enriching.

10. Travel Insurance
As much as we like to think of vacations as fun and carefree, sometimes accidents or the unthinkable happens and you want to ensure that you and your travel companions are all properly insured and can receive health care etc. if needed.

Many credit card companies offer you the option to not only earn travel air miles but they also provide medical travel insurance, credit card theft protection and even insurance for lost or stolen valuables like jewelry and cell phones while on your trip. By covering all your bases you can sit back, relax and truly enjoy your travel experience.
