Choosing The Right Benefits For Your Family Is Time Well Spent.

Choosing The Right Benefits For Your Family Is Time Well Spent.

I love the idea of getting benefits that cover more than just basic medical expenses. Having insurance benefits to take care of myself and most importantly my family and household expenses etc. in the event that I am sick or injured, takes away the stress and worry that so many working parents like myself face on a daily basis.

Most importantly having good benefits coverage and not just settling for the basics is so important, because in life you never know when the unexpected could happen and like my mom used to say "it's better to be safe than sorry."

Unfortunately many of us don't take the time needed to properly review our benefit plans to ensure that we are selecting the best coverage possible for ourselves and for our family and we end up over paying for coverage or worst delaying our coverage. Aflac's 2013 Open Enrollment Survey showed that 41% of employees spent 15 minutes or less researching their benefit options and 24% spent only 5 minutes or less.

In fact the majority of us spend more time researching for our next vacation, TV, computer or a new car than we spend selecting our benefits. When we pay an average of $4,565 a year in premiums for our employer-sponsored health plan, it's worth it to set time aside to research and choose the right benefits for our family...

As parents we spend most of our time at work, running errands, doing household chores and taking care of our families, there is barely any time left over to squeeze in some down time for ourselves. Important things like ensuring that we have the proper benefits coverage gets put on the backburner as our to-do list continues to grow.

The health, safety and assurance that our children, spouse and our household will be taken care of when the unplanned scenarios that life throws our way happens, should be at the top of our priority list. If you're still waiting to pick the right coverage for your family or you've simply set it aside for now, it's easier to do than you think, especially during open enrollment season.

Many employers offer sessions with HR or a qualified employee to help you understand what's offered in your company benefits package. Understanding your options and taking the time to select the right benefits can help you avoid costly mistakes. On average 42% of workers waste $750 year due to mistakes when selecting their benefits. I am sure we would all prefer to keep that amount in our pockets.

Take advantage of opportunities offered by your employer to learn more about your coverage, then make time to discuss it with your spouse. Voluntary insurance policies are offered by companies like Aflac that are designed to supplement your major medical plans, and pay you directly for unexpected costs associated with a covered serious illness, injury or loss.

Plus the cash benefits can be used to help pay rent, gas, groceries, child care or any other out-of-pocket expenses you might have. Some of the voluntary insurance policies offered by Aflac include accident, dental, life, vision, cancer, hospital intensive care and more.

If we have learned anything from our experience, it's that the longer we delay doing the important things the more stressful it becomes to think about or complete them. So don't delay any more, make time after your family dinner or after you put the kids to bed to ensure that you can sleep soundly at night. Without worrying about your finances etc. because you took the time to choose the right benefits coverage for your family. Make time for the important things now and have peace of mind about the future.
