Have you made a smash cake for a birthday party before? Our little one's first birthday is coming up and we are intrigued by the idea of making not one but two cakes to celebrate! While we love all the elaborate and extravagant decorated cakes that you can find at local pastry shops, nothing compares to a cake that we can make together as a family and it is easy to do thanks to Betty Crocker's pre-made cake mix and frosting.

If you consider yourself a baking expert you will love the time that it will save you and if you are not then following the easy instructions provided by Betty Crocker on their cake-mix box and frosting container will leave you feeling like an expert, especially after you taste your delicious cake!

Now that we have convinced you to go the D.I.Y way and bake your own cake for your next birthday party, we'll get  back to the idea of creating a perfect for smashing cake to go along with the official first birthday cake. Read on for more...

So what do you do with a smash cake? Like the name says you smash it to bits and pieces, make a fun mess, get it all over your hands, face, chest and a few tasty bits in your mouth. The smashing part makes it a fun activity for babies and young kids who let's face it will end up getting cake and frosting all over their hands and clothes anyway.

Plus it leaves you with a second beautifully decorated birthday cake that hasn't been licked, poked or smashed to serve to guests at the birthday party.

For our little one's first birthday we are considering making one of the delicious first birthday cakes and smash cakes featured online at Betty Crocker, like the cute yellow rubber duck birthday smash cake that reminds us of bath time toys or the creative watercolor cake. We simply can't wait to bake and decorate it but we will let our little one make the final choice.
