Could you imagine actor Matthew McConaughey playing the role of 'Jack Dawson' instead of Leonardo Dicaprio or actress Gwyneth Paltrow as 'Rose' instead of Kate Winslet? Well it almost happened. Read on for more fun facts...

The studio was considering actor Matthew McConaughey to play the role of 'Jack', but Director James Cameron insisted on Leonardo DiCaprio for the role.

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow was considered for the female lead role of Rose, but British actress Kate Winslet got the opportunity instead. Actresses Sharon Stone, Cameron Diaz, Nicole Kidman and Jodie Foster were also considered.

Actor Robert Deniro was offered the role of Captain Smith but was unable to film because of health issues.

The theme song for Titanic 'My Heart Will Go On' almost never made it on the soundtrack. Director James Cameron had no intention of using a theme song. Composer James Horner and lyricist Will Jennings secretly wrote and recorded a demo tape of the song with Celine Dion, when director James Cameron heard it he decided to play it at the end of the movie during the credits.

After finishing the script for the movie, director James Cameron discovered that there was actually a passenger by the name of J. Dawson who died on the Titanic. The memorial tombstone above is dedicated to him and is one of the most visited.

When actress Kate Winslet found out that she would have to strip down and film a naked scene with Leonardo Dicraprio, she wanted to find a way to break the ice. So the first time they met she flashed Leo.

One of Leo's line bloopers during filming went on to be one of the most honest acting moments in the film. During the scene where 'Jack' draws a portrait of a naked 'Rose' he asks her to 'lie on the bed, uh I mean couch' the actual line was only supposed to be 'Lie on that couch' but Director James Cameron liked it so he left the blooper in.

The hands shown in n the famous scene where 'Jack' draws a portrait of a naked 'Rose' lying on a couch, is actually that of director James Cameron not Leonardo Dicaprio as the movie would have us believe. In fact James Cameron drew all the sketches shown in 'Jack's' sketchbook.

The cost to make the movie 'Titanic' was much more than the cost to build the actual titanic ship, even by today's standards. The movie cost $200 million to make, while the actual ship was built for $7.5 million between 1910-1912, that's equal to roughly $120-150 million in 1997 dollars.
