For this lifestyle issue we introduce you to the art works of New York based Artist Mickalene Thomas. On first seeing her paintings one is captured by the vivid colors, complex detail and the use of rhinestones which add a larger than life sparkle to her acrylic and enamel paintings. Her art work 'introduces a complex vision of what it means to be a woman and expands common definitions of beauty.'
According to her website Mickalene draws her inspiration from art prodigies like 'the 19th century Hudson River School, Edouar Manet, Henri Matisse, and Romare Bearden', as she 'continues to explore notions of beauty from a contemporary perspective infused with the more recent influences of popular culture and pop art.'
