Bizarre Beauty Regimes: New Treatment for Acne, Wrinkles & Scars is Snail Mucus?

So what does it take for beauty treatments to become a fad? It has to sound a bit exotic or bizarre, promise breakthrough results, and a few user testimonials will do.

This is the case with the latest beauty regime that is taking over the US, UK and South Korea.

Snail slime, gel or mucus is primarily marketed as an acne solution but is also used for skin regeneration and as a scar and burn treatment.

It joins a long list of bizarre beauty treatments like snake venom, bee mucus, diamond dust, shark oil, chicken marrow, bird feces and bull semen. Read on to learn more about the snail mucus beauty fad.

According to the Daily Mail, snail slime "has been used in European creams for years and even Ancient Greeks recognised its potential, with Hippocrates reportedly recommending crushed snails to relieve inflamed skin.

Most recently, the beauty potential of snail slime was discovered by chance, when Chilean snail farmers noticed their skin healed quickly and with no scars when they handled snails for the French food market. Those same farmers went on to launch Chilean snail slime product, Elicina, which this year enjoys its 15th anniversary.'

Korean brand Missha launched Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Cream in 2010. Claiming that it 'soothes, regenerates and heals skin,' the product contains 70 per cent snail extract - and to ensure the quality of the magic ingredient, snails are fed red ginseng.Another Korean brand, It’s Skin, manufactures Prestige Cream d’escargot, which contains 21 per cent snail goo.

Labcconte USA, Andes Nature, Capibell, De Tuinen, Elicina and Alfa snail products are all available to buy online or in the U.S."
