1. Know the Different Skin Types.

Before deciding on a skin care routine, you should first figure out your skin type by taking our easy what's your skin type quiz to determine if you have dry, oily or combination skin.

Dry skin is flaky or scaly and has a rough texture to it. Conversely, oily skin is shiny and greasy. With combination skin, you may have dry spots, usually on the cheeks, and oil spots on the forehead, nose, and chin.

If you have sensitive skin, you may experience stinging, burning, or itching after using makeup or other products. Normal or balanced skin is clear and not sensitive. Before using any products on your skin, check the labels first.

2. Cleanse and Moisturize in the Morning.

Use a gentle cleanser in the morning regardless of your skin type. If your skin is oily, use an oil-free cleanser, but avoid regular soap as it too harsh for your face.

Next, apply a moisturizer while your face is still damp. All skin, even young or oily skin, needs moisture. If you have acne or oily skin, use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer. Finally, apply sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15, even if you are indoors for most of the day.

If your skin is dry, washing your face once a day is fine. In the morning, rinse your face with lukewarm water, pat it dry, and save the cleanser for nighttime. If you exercise, play sports, or take a gym class, cleanse your skin afterward to keep your pores from clogging with sweat.

3. Apply Powder to Absorb Oil and Lighten Skin Tone During the Daytime.

You probably notice your skin gets oily around lunchtime, especially in the area known as the T-zone, which includes your forehead, nose, and chin. Hormones may also cause your body temperature to be slightly higher during the day, making you look flushed. Dust your face with a loose powder to absorb oil and lighten your skin tone.

4. Concentrate on Skin Recovery During the Night.

Night is your body's time to recover, so your evening beauty routine is the most important. Begin with a gentle cleanser or makeup remover, and apply the product with a soft washcloth or cotton pad to help exfoliate your skin. After you wash and dry your face, smooth on an oil serum treatment containing essential fatty acids to help seal in moisture during the night. Pat an eye cream over any crow's feet and up to the brow bone to help firm skin around your eyes and finish with a night cream for more moisturizing while you sleep.

You'll discover many products available that can fit your individual skin care needs and budget, but choosing the right ones can be confusing. Many sources for skin care information are online, such as the Amway Connections blog, a reliable resource for skin care.

5. Practice These Additional Techniques:
  • Don't wear your makeup to bed. You may be tempted to go directly to bed without washing your face, but not removing makeup could clog your pores and cause breakouts.
  • Replace your makeup often, especially products such as mascara. Replace eye makeup every four months to prevent bacteria from getting in your eyes.
  • Never share makeup or makeup tools and use fresh applicators if you are trying makeup in a store.
  • Don't apply eyeliner inside your eyelid, as it may irritate your eyes. If you have an eye infection, replace your makeup immediately so that you don't cause the infection to reoccur.
  • Never put makeup on in a moving vehicle as a bump or swerve could cause a scratch to your eye or you could get makeup inside your eye.
  • Finally, a good night's sleep and a healthy diet can help you keep your skin as soft and beautiful as you want.
